Boat builder jailed for excalibur tragedy has pleaded guilty to murder

Crown prosecutor Paul Durnin QC said he would not make a ruling about the length of the maximum sentence until more information had been gathered from the scene of the disaster.

The trial will continue tomorrow morning.

The boat was carrying 1,800 people and was carrying 12 crew and their two bodies when it sank shortly after midnight on 21 September 2014 in a remote fishing village near Horsham.

On Friday, a judge at Horsham Crown Court agreed with defence lawyer Martin Green's proposal to reduce the sentence from life in prison.

It is the first time a judge in the country has imposed such a sentence, because most countries consider sentences for manslaughter to be too severe in comparison with other offences.

The judge told Horsham-born Green that the sentence was more appropriate for the victim's family, as they were likely to survive.

Green has a history of appealing his convictions, including convictions from 2003 on drugs offences. He was convicted last year after spending 10 years in jail for attempting to smuggle drugs off of the ship and for conspiracy to supply an illegal substance.

The ruling will also prevent Green, the third defendant, from serving a further 16 years in prison.

Green told the court he would appeal against the sentencing.

"If you are going to get the death penalty as is, I hope you understand that I believe there have been mistakes made and I believe you can be rehabilitated. You have to live your life," Green told the court.

Green will still face criminal trial over the manslaughter and illegal drugs charges which he was convicted of in 2003 in connection with.

Us deflation pushes aust dollar higher


Japan's yen has jumped 5% against the dollar since December 2016, thanks to a rapid rise in the supply of consumer goods sold abroad.


But it has fallen 1% against the euro this year, to a low of 75.53, and is now down 10% against the dollar.

China's economy shrank 0.1% in 2016, its slowest pace of growth since 2002, and its fastest in 23 years. But as its slowdown accelerated in recent years, China's economy expanded slowly in the first quarter, even though the Chinese currency rose against the dollar to 74.30.


China's economy was forecast to grow 1.2% in 2017, slightly faster than the 1.7% growth in 2016 that economists had expected. But China's growth will fall back to 1.2% this year.


* China's housing market sees slowing growth


In late June, Beijing's central bank announced it would start issuing currency controls, the first such measures since the financial crisis two years ago.

The central bank said it will cut interest rates for six months starting on September 1, to a 10-year median of 2.5%. The decision sparked fears of a crisis and an asset-price bubble.


The housing market is also slowing. Chinese state-run media noted in late June that China's official monthly real estate data was expected to show a 6.5% rise in home sales in June.


That slowdown in Chinese home sales comes after housing is a core component of the government's foreign exchange reserve holdings. Since December, the reserves held by the central bank have increased 20%.
